Do you want to see the cover of my debut novel? Of course you do
An exclusive cover reveal for Nonsense subscribers... VIP... high value... unique
Hello friends.
I wrote a BOOK, and it’s coming out in AUGUST, and it’s going to be in bookstores and people are going to read it, and I am just so excited I need to throw myself into a shallow lake like an overheated Labrador.
It’s called ‘In Spite of You’, and it’s its my debut fiction novel, a queer rom-com about love and revenge, and above all else, the transformative power of being a spiteful little freak. I’m really proud of this book, it’s taken years to write, spanning heartbreaks, pandemics, sore tummies… But it’s here.

And I have a cover! And I thought that I would show the cover and share some of my first endorsements with all my friends at Nonsense, so you can see what the hell I’m doing when I’m not writing weird little stories for you folks. I’m writing books! And staring into the void.
Look at those nice things that people I respect wrote about it! That’s crazy!
But what is this book even about? Well, it’s about the duality of man, about choosing between the only two emotions that matter, love or spite. I’m the world’s biggest rom-com fan, and after reading the brilliantly funny ‘Boyfriend Material’ by Alexis Hall, I realised it was my life’s goal to write my own queer rom-com. I had so much fun actually trying to write a book that prioritises both queerness AND comedy.
Here’s my best summary:
People say that the best revenge is living well - but what if your life sucks too? ‘In Spite of You’ follows Jeremy, a messy pop-culture journalist working in youth media who is suddenly forced to re-evaluate his life when he is invited to a reunion for his prestigious university writing workshop, which will be celebrating the career of his toxic ex-boyfriend, who broke his heart.
Jeremy realises he has just six months to embark on a manic and ill-advised spite campaign to fix his entire life and get revenge on his ex - but the purity of his hate is derailed when he meets the handsome and perfect Sam. Will Jeremy choose love… or spite?
ANYWAY. It’s out in August, I’m going to keep you updated on all the details, but I’ll leave you with my queen Rebecca Shaw’s endorsement, which you should take very seriously considering she famously “doesn’t believe men know how to write”.
“A funny and sexy queer romp. Come for the horny love story between men, come again for the love story between friends” - Rebecca Shaw.
Making my first ever Substack comment just to say this cover freaking RULES, Patrick!!!!!!!!! So excited for this and for you!
I created a whole profile just to comment that this cover is amazing. 10/10
